# Basics About Blockchain

### What is Web3?

Web3 is a new iteration of the Internet. It is based on blockchain and other decentralization tools (when you don’t have a single body of control). We are facing the onset of Web3, even though it’s just in the cradle!

For more clarity, Web3 was preceded by Web1 (statistical information websites) and Web2 (social networks, search engines).

### What is blockchain?

A blockchain is a special **database** type with many people having simultaneous access. Blockchain technology offers an unprecedented level of security. As copies of the current blockchain version are simultaneously located in different places worldwide, hacking some computers will not affect system operation. It is also important to note that no single control body or organization could influence this database.

There are a lot of independent blockchains now (Ethereum, Solana, Near, **TON**, Polygon, TRON, etc.). They all have their pros and cons. Our lab specializes in the TON blockchain!

### What are cryptocurrencies and tokens?

A **cryptocurrency** is a digital blockchain currency, an alternative to fiat money (USD, EUR, CNY). A cryptocurrency always has its own blockchain protocol and is used for transactions in this blockchain network.

A **token** is a cryptocurrency derivative. The difference between a token and a cryptocurrency is that cryptocurrencies have their own blockchains, while tokens are built on the existing blockchain. In fact, a token is a unit of accounting, a set of numbers written in the blockchain. In other words, a token is a record stating that you own something and its amount.
